Unusual Wedding Venue: Getting married at a Supermarket

Growing up, I’ve always wanted to try out the check out girl gig at the Supermarket. I thought it’d be lots of fun checking out other people’s groceries. Never for once did I think that it’ll be a great venue for a wedding though! But a couple in the UK thought it a great idea!

Most people going to their local supermarket leave with a trolley full of groceries. However, tomorrow, one Dundee couple will be leaving with a lifetime commitment.

Kenny Sutherland and Jane Clark are getting married at Sainsbury’s in Baldovie Road, where they both work.

The couple will take their vows surrounded by family and friends while customers fill their trolleys and staff continue to work away.

To show their support, colleagues at the store have put up posters congratulating the couple on the happy occasion.

Jane (42) will begin her bridal march through the seasonal goods aisle to Mika’s “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)”, with the ceremony taking place in front of the flower stand at the store’s main entrance.

Checkout girl Jane first met Kenny three years ago after she spotted him replenishing shelves in the store’s kiosk — and it was love at first sight.

Despite the unusual wedding venue, the bride said she is looking forward to her big day, adding, “I’m not nervous at all.

“I’m just looking forward to it as all my family and friends are going to be there.

“There will be a lot of customers there, too, and a lot of those customers have become friends. I even got a bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne handed in from one customer while on the checkout.”

A spokeswoman from Sainsbury’s added, “We are thrilled to be supportive of our colleagues and wish them all the best.”

4th of July Wedding held at Independence Hall

Are you planning to have a 4th of July wedding next year? In need of wedding theme ideas? Why not get married at the Independence Hall in your county just like what Ralph Archbold and Linda Wilde did at the eve of America’s Independence Day this year.

Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross celebrated the eve of the Fourth of July not with fireworks but with wedding vows.

Ralph Archbold and Linda Wilde
, who portray the historical figures, tied the knot Thursday evening in a public ceremony in front of Independence Hall, where the real Franklin helped draft the nation’s founding documents.

The bride and groom, as well as the entire wedding party, were in costume for the event.

“Ralph and Linda, the entire city could not be happier for you,” said Mayor Michael Nutter, who performed the brief ceremony.

After exchanging vows, Archbold and Wilde were given a standing ovation by the crowd of several thousand as the Philly Pops, who were to give a concert immediately afterward, played the wedding march.

The couple boarded a lighted open horse-drawn coach for the trip to a private reception at the city’s historic City Tavern, where Franklin himself dined along with such notables as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

You can get married on a $150 budget

In the US, the average wedding costs around $27,000. It’s as much as a downpayment for a house. But of course, it’s the most special day in your life and if you’re got the dough, why not splurge?

However, if you’re on a really, really tight budget. You can still have the wedding of your dreams for $150. Mary Beth Baptiste shows us how.

You might call me a minimalist, or just plain cheap, but when I set out to plan my recent wedding I didn’t want anything elaborate. My husband-to-be, Richard, agreed, although he did harbor a wish for a Vegas drive-through wedding with an Elvis impersonator as our witness.

While nearly $30,000 may buy more glitz, it can’t buy more joy or romance. Our own wedding in the woods was intimate, dreamy and definitely one-of-a-kind. We snow shoed a short distance into the trees and found a pine alcove for our chapel. Our Unitarian-Universalist minister read some inspirational passages we had chosen, we exchanged our own vows and we kissed. Two friends photographed the ceremony with a digital camera and surprised us by popping open a bottle of champagne they’d carried into the woods in a backpack. Throughout the ceremony, light from the sun and clouds patterned through snow-laden trees. The usual Wyoming wind was absent.

Honeymoon Idea: Going on a cruise

Daily Life In The Carribean
Image details: Daily Life In The Carribean served by picapp.com

When we think of honeymoons, we think of going to a specific destination for some R&R and of course, for some alone time with our beloved. I have found recently that honeymoon cruises are gaining popularity as an alternative. I’ve had friends and relatives who have experienced a holiday cruise and they said that contrary to popular opinion, there are heaps you can do aboard the ship while sailing from one island to the other!

Why don’t you try it?

Groom Groove gives you the low-down on honeymoon cruises:

Cost: Cool

The cost of a honeymoon cruise can be less than a traditional honeymoon, with 7-9 day, all-inclusive packages starting at about $600. Included in the price of many cruises are: meals, accommodations, entertainment, and activities aboard the ship. The cost of a non-cruise honeymoon would include airfare, accommodations, meals, subsequent travel arrangements at the arrival destination, and activities, all left up to the busy groom. Even many all-inclusive couples packages cant match the value of a cruise with multiple destinations.

Salma Hayek
Image details: Salma Hayek served by picapp.com

Did you know that Salma Hayek’s fiance, French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault is planning to spend $3.5 million on their wedding in a ceremony in France next spring.

Wow, crazy! $3.5 million for a wedding! How will Salamat and Francois-Henri spend their dosh:

- The couple is having a Cinderella wedding theme

Obviously, an expensive theme if you ask me!

- Salma’s wedding dress will cost $500,000 - a customised wedding gown made by Nicolas Ghesquiere, who previously designed Nicole Kidman’s wedding dress.

What will be in it, diamonds? How can a wedding gown cost that much??

Wedding Saving Tip: Auction a spot in your bridal party in eBay

Nothing surprises me anymore. Engaged couples find unique ways to raise funds (or save for their wedding). This time, a bride got the idea to auction a spot in her bridal party to raise funds to pay for her wedding in eBay.

It worked.

The winner paid more than $5,000 for the opportunity! The person doesn’t even know the couple! Weird!

Being a bridesmaid can be expensive, as any woman who has been fitted for a dress she did not pick out, or spent hundreds of dollars for a plane ticket, can attest. But, then again, most bridesmaids know the bride.

Then, there is Kelly Gray and her fifth bridesmaid.

Ms. Gray, a Virginia Beach hairdresser, auctioned off the chance to be a bridesmaid in her April 2009 wedding on eBay. The winning bid on Wednesday was $5,700.

Ms. Gray, 23, had long dreamed of being a bride, but she and her fiancé, Karl Gau, could not afford the $7,000 wedding they have planned at the Virginia Beach Conference Center.

“While other children would say they wanted to be a teacher or singer when they grew up, I would always say that I wanted to be a beautiful bride!” Ms. Gray wrote on eBay.

She said she did not want anything fancy, no horse-drawn carriages or ice sculptures, just a three-layer cake and dancing. “I want a wedding,” Ms. Gray said in an interview. “Normal is expensive.”

What to do during a power outage at your wedding

I recently emcee’d the reception of my aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding ‘renewal of vows’ on Sunday, 22 June at the height of a tropical storm here in the Philippines. The storm was so strong that the reception venue had a power cut and was (thankfully) working on a gas-powered generator.

Since it was only a generator, the supply of electricity was limited. While the guests were streaming in, we had to shift a lot of the equipment to one side where the power cord was to plug in the cables for the mic, for the band. It was hellish.

From this experience, I have learnt a few things/tips that I want to share with anyone who are in the throes of planning their weddings:

1) Make sure that your venue has a generator so that you still have power/electricity in case of power outages/failures

2) If you have a wedding coordinator, ask them re their contingency plans in case of power outages. Remember, you are paying your coordinators to make your life easier. If you are undecided on which agency to go with, the answer to this question may be a deciding factor for you.

3) If you have a family friend acting as your wedding planner, make sure you sit down with her/him to plan what you’re going to do in case of a power outage

4) If you are the host or emcee of the wedding programme, you should learn to be flexible and re-arrange the order of the programme if and when required.

5) if you are the host and having technical difficulties due to the power failure, be ready to distract your guests with jokes, anecdotes about the couple while waiting for the music and/or equipment to be ready. We had this problem at the wedding reception I hosted on Sunday and good thing I was able to think quickly on my feet! Ask the audience questions like ‘how the couple met’, ‘how they got engaged’, be prepared with small prizes to whomever gives the correct answer! It’s one sure way to entertain the guests while you are getting ready for the next part of your programme or if you encounter any technical difficulties!

Any other tips you can share with me? Please feel free to leave comments here!

and he is rumored to have at least 20 groomsmen! Wow, that’s a big entourage unless they don’t have any bridesmaids? Still big!

Congratulations to Rubuen and his fiancee, Surata!

Ruben Studdard is planning a big Southern wedding Saturday with fiancée Surata Zuri McCants – with at least 20 groomsmen at his side, a source tells PEOPLE.

The American Idol second-season champ will marry McCants, 30, at Canterbury United Methodist Church in the tony Mountainbrook neighborhood of Birmingham, Ala., according to the source close to the wedding. A rep for Studdard confirms he’s getting married this weekend.

Studdard and his groomsmen will wear black Joseph Abboud tuxedos from local outfitter Mr. Burch Formal Wear, the source says. The groomsmen will wear black shirts with black vests while Studdard will wear a white vest and a white hand-tied bow tie.
