A Ferris Wheel Wedding

by Christine on March 28th, 2006

I have always wanted to have an unusual wedding but budget constraints and the desire to still have that ‘white wedding’ won so what I did was to incorporate a few of my quirky ideas into a ‘normal wedding’.

I totally admire Audrey Fernandez, 23 as she exchanged vows with her beau, David Ramos, 25 at the Miami-Dade Country Fair where the ceremony was framed by the Ferris wheel, a fountain spouting blue water, a strawberry shaped frozen-drink stand and an Arepa Queen kiosk.

According to the blushing bride:

”I’ve always wanted a really unusual wedding, something out of this world,”

How did they get this unusual wedding wish?
The couple entered a contest called “Marriage on the Midway” which was sponsored by the fair and the North American Midway Entertainment. Audrey entered for both her and David.

For the contest, she had to persuade contest organizers, in 150 or fewer words, why she and David should be the winners.

According to Miami Herald,

”We are ready to make this longtime commitment. The love we share is unconditional. We have a strong bond that is unique and priceless,” she wrote.

Between March 7 and 15, 2005, photos of the 10 competing couples appeared with their essays on the fair’s website, where the public could vote on which couple they wanted to see win.

Audrey and David won by a landslide.

They received more than 9,000 votes while their closest competitors got a little more than 2,000.

In addition to the quirky wedding — which included four hours of rides and all the fair food they could eat — the couple won an all-expenses paid honeymoon in the Bahamas, courtesy of Midway Ford.

To the strains of Pachelbel’s Canon, a white horse-drawn carriage delivered the bride to the ceremony, and whisked the couple around the fair afterward.

Wedding guests usually have only beef and chicken to choose from, but the gowned and tuxedoed guests at this wedding reception got to stuff themselves with corn dogs, cotton candy and elephant ears.

The newlyweds plan to leave next weekend for their honeymoon, and are looking forward to it and the rest of their lives.

”We go so well together,” said the groom, giving his bride a one-armed squeeze. “This is so cool and unique. I love it!”
