Alternative Wedding Gift Registries

Gone are the days when engaged couples register for traditional gifts such as linens, pots and pans, toasters and the like, now soon-to-wed couples register with their interests in mind.
Instead of registering for simple linens and pots and pans for a new home, many couples are opting to register for wide-screen televisions, expensive kitchen appliances, the honeymoon and items not even necessarily associated with marriage.
Christa Vagnozzi, the wedding editor of TheKnot.com, believes that many of today’s couples live a more modern, casual and less traditional lifestyle than their parents and grandparents did.
Jodi Beaulieu and her fiance, Will Porter, of Hooksett are planning their wedding for May and have finished their gift wish list. Included are a few items you might not normally find on your average wedding registry.
“I did register at Target for some camping gear, everything from a tent to marshmallow roasting skewers,” Beaulieu said. “My fiance and I love camping, and we just don’t have the money to buy everything.”
Or if the couple really does have everything, sign them up for a service like Netflix, suggested Jessie Rosen, PR coordinator of the The Knot. For the music lovers, purchase them gift cards for iTunes or another site where songs can be downloaded.
“Certain travel agents have travel packages that guests can contribute money toward,” Vagnozzi explained.
Charities are also an other gift option.
“Older and younger couples who already have everything or are on a second marriage choose a specific charity or several,” Vagnozzi explained. “Some places allow you to donate a portion of the proceeds to one of several charities.”
“You want to make sure that you register for a lot of different items because they will be bought for your bridal shower and some people give them as wedding gifts instead of money,” Vagnozzi says. “But, it’s your wedding, you might as well get what you want.”

Honeymoon Registries and “Charity Registries” are against etiquette and improper. Just because the industry thinks up a new gimmick to market to brides and grooms doesn’t necessarily make it proper or polite.
