Engagement Party Ideas

by Christine on April 4th, 2006

Have you just gotten engaged and want to tell the world about it? Here are 5 engagement party ideas from online site, The Knot:

1. Up, Up, and Away
Rent a hot-air balloon and have a party in midair. Some companies have baskets that hold up to 16 people, or you can rent several balloons with smaller baskets and snap pics of the view and of each other. Awe-inspiring vistas will get people talking and this once-in-a-lifetime experience will forever mark your engagement party in the memories of your guests. Land in a picturesque spot and enjoy a catered champagne brunch.

2. Swirl, Sniff, and Sip
Arrange for a private wine tasting at a local cooking school or winery (be sure hors d’oeuvres are included) or have a guest speaker or local wine maker come to your home to lead the tasting. Use place cards to make sure guests are sipping (not spitting!) with people they don’t know for optimal effect.

3. Costume Ball Cocktails
Throw a themed cocktail party. Ask your guests to dress up as their favorite married celebrities, silver- or small-screen couple. Or, suggest they dress up as a character those celebrities have played. For example, a woman could dress up as Tea Leoni playing Tina, the neurotic grad student in Flirting With Disaster, a man as David Ducovny playing Agent Mulder. Or, a woman could come as Lorraine Bracco playing the psychologist in The Sopranos and her beau as Edward James Olmos playing a teacher in Stand and Deliver.

4. Penthouse View
Rent a skybox for the big game and enjoy a primo view of your favorite team. Sports, with their glorious saves, infuriating misses, and endless statistics, are a great conversation starter. For those only peripherally interested in the antics of the field, be sure cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres are in ample supply.

5. Studio 54 Redux
Glam out in your finest duds and trip the light fantastic at a rented nightclub complete with a disco ball, smokin’ DJ, strobe lights, cigarette (cigar or candy) girls, theme-dressed waiters, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks. For example, if you and your mate are both from San Francisco, have the waitstaff dress in retro ’30s garb and serve martinis and pan-Asian appetizers. Make sure the DJ plays some oldies but goodies for the older crowd.
