Transitioning from early church ceremony to evening reception

We have a question from one of our readers Mary Lou, has a question:

Question:

What should a woman guest wear that transitions from an early church ceremony into an evening reception?

My answer:
I have attended several weddings where the wedding ceremony was around 2 to 3pm and the reception was not until about 6pm. What I did was to wear a dress (not sparkly) for the ceremony then jazz it up with a sparkly/glittery shawl or bolero or shrug for the evening. You can also choose to wear a light coloured shawl to go with your dress for the ceremony and change into a glittery one for the evening reception.

What about the others, have you got other tips?

What you need to know about Afghan Muslim Weddings

Are you engaged to an Afghan Muslim and unsure about the wedding traditions? Fazl ur Rahim Muzaffary has a great article on everything you need to know about Afghan muslim Weddings.

Marriage in the traditional Afghan culture has a deep-rooted process through which it treads step by step. Rarely do young men and women have an opportunity to meet each other, and the to-be wife is usually chosen in a haste. When a young man wants to marry a young lady who is from an unknown family, first his parents do some kind of background check about her, trying to know more about her morals, beauty, and other family affairs.

If they are contented with what they find, his parents will send a female family member or a relative to her house in order to understand, indirectly or directly, and would disclose the proposal, if the situation is favorable. This consultation process takes some time, and a date is usually fixed to announce the decision among the relatives, if both sides are satisfied with this deal.

Pole Dancing Lessons at your Hen’s night

This is a great idea! If you are planning for your friend’s Hen’s night, why not organize a pole dancing lesson? I’m sure it’ll be a hit among your mates and it’s a departure from the usual going out and getting pissed. At this Hen’s night, they’ll go home learning something new which their partners/boyfriends/spouses might also enjoy *wink*

Wedding Bells for Prince William & Kate Middleton?

RBS 6 Nations: England v Italy

Wait, I thought they have broken up? Now, they’re getting married???

If the old adage “the couple that plays together stays together” is to be believed, then Prince William and Kate Middleton are a solid bet for the future. The lovebirds are often seen partying with friends as well as attending concerts and sporting events, and it’s this kind of foundation that leads many royal experts to believe that William and Kate will announce their engagement next spring.

William has an unusually large gap in his July schedule next year — after he completes his military training — which has sparked talk of a summer wedding.

6 Smart Tips on buying the right wedding band

Thinkstock Single Image Set

Michael O’Connor of MSN has some great tips for choosing and buying the right wedding band. When my fiance (now Husband) and I were planning and preparing for our wedding, we decided on 2 to 3 things that we’d like to splurge on. Things that we would have to mark the special day in our lives.

One of these things were our wedding bands. Apart from the photos and the videos and your memories of your wedding day, your wedding bands are living reminders of your commitment to each other. Therefore, they deserve thoughtful consideration.

Michael’s 6 tips are:

Search at least six months prior to the wedding

Don’t skimp on the wedding band budget

Have a frank discussion with each other
Today, wedding bands don’t necessarily need to match each other exactly, but they should be complementary and say something about the fact that the two people wearing them are “together.” Talk about the styles you like and if you want bands that are an exact match, or simply work beautifully together.

Rosamund Pike and Joe Wright calls off wedding

This is so sad. I hate it when I hear engaged couples breaking off their wedding engagements. I suppose it’s much better to call it quits before marrying rather than going through a messy divorce later!

Former Bond girl Rosamund Pike has been dumped by her director fiancé Joe Wright.
The pair met on the set of period drama ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in 2005 and Wright proposed to the actress at Lake Como in Italy last September.

But Atonement filmmaker Wright, 36, allegedly called off the nuptials after Pike, 29, sent out hundreds of wedding invitations - featuring a steamy shot of the couple in a bathtub - without his knowledge, according to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

More Tips for 08-08-08 Wedding Date

It seems that we have quite a number of Our One Heart readers who are getting married on 08-08-08. Such a fab date!

One of our readers, Antoinette has a great idea!

We are also getting married 08/08/08. We’ve always said *Love you to Infinity*…so we are doing something to that extent. *Love to Infinity* I love the 8 ball idea, was thinking one big one for each table. I’ve also found on Ebay, lots of Infinity style jewelry…was thinking about the wedding party - necklaces, or something to that effect. Ebay has been a saint for me, and Wilton - They had our wedding invitations - the infinity rings! And we have our cake topper which matches the invitations - infinity rings. I’m trying not to go too overboard w/ the 08/08/08 - but I definitely want Infinity Love to be the theme. Not too far away ladies!!!!!! Are ya feeling as stressed as me? LOL

“Love you to Infinity” is such a great tag line to use for an 08-08-08 wedding! The number 8 means infinity, doesn’t it?

Gay Couples can now marry in California

To all same-sex or gay couples (or whatever ‘label’ you want to use) out there, good news, you can now marry in California (Same sex marriages have been available here in New Zealand for the last 2 years or so!)

Guess who first couple to get married under this new law in California? An octogenarian couple! Sweeeettt!

The bride wore a pastel-coloured pant-suit – and so did the other bride. At 5.01pm yesterday, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin walked up the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall and the two women became the first gay couple to take advantage of California’s decision to legalise same-sex marriage.

After half a century together, the couple, who are both in their eighties, were married in front of 50 guests by the city’s mayor, Gavin Newsom. They were hand-picked to usher in a “summer of love” in recognition of their status as pioneers of the gay rights movement.

When Ms Lyon, 84, and Ms Martin, 87, fell in love in 1952, gays and lesbians faced arrest and imprisonment; in some cases, they were subjected to electro-shock therapy. This week, after a long campaign, thousands are rushing to celebrate equality – of a sort.

“It’s something that’s been due a long time, so thank God it’s finally here,” Ms Lyon told reporters. “Our love and lives together deserve celebrating. Although we have little need for more kitchen gadgets, we do believe a government acknowledgment of our fundamental constitutional rights is a fitting gift.”
