Timeless Wedding Dress
I am a sentimental person. I like preserving key events in the past for others in the present and future to enjoy, perhaps that is why I am so into scrapbooking.
This sentimentality extended towards my ‘dream wedding’. I grew up thinking that I would walk down the aisle towards the man of my dreams in the same wedding gown my own Mother wore at her wedding. It never happened though. Oh yes, my Mom’s wedding gown is still with us but it was never properly preserved, the fabric is now yellowy and faded-looking PLUS, my Mom was so petite at her wedding in 1968, there was no way I could fit in it even if I tried!
That is why when I read about this news, I was touched. After 138 years, a wedding gown gets worn by the present generation. Awwwww…..This is what you call a ‘timeless’ wedding dress indeed!
Bridal gowns are as susceptible to trends as any other fashion apparel. It is hard to imagine, therefore, that any one dress could suit the tastes of generations of women, from the 1860s to the present day.
Marian Biddle Johnson wore the family wedding dress in 1935. It’s been in her family since 1868.
Katie Henderson, the granddaughter of Marian Biddle Johnson, was wearing the dress this month when she married Geoffrey Johnston.
The silk satin dress has a fitted bodice, cap sleeves and a full skirt with a train. A waist sash forms a flat bow in the back. A lace ruffle adorns the wide neckline. The lace-up bodice enabled it to magically accommodate the waists of nine different women. No zipper could have done that. It is likely that minor alterations were performed for each bride, but nearly all the original fabric remains.
The dress looked good in 1868, it looked good through the 20th century and it looks good now, even if it isn’t snow white any more.
