With This Necklace, I Thee Wed

Is it a sign of the times? Is the perennial line ‘With This Bling, err I mean — ring, I thee wed’ gone for good? Will couples start exchanging alternative jewelries at the altar?

Wedding planner Merilee Norman is an expert on what brides want, and she says they want diamonds.

“All the brides primarily that we have worked with, first time brides, they are just excited to be wearing that engagement ring with the diamonds on it,” Norman said.

Well, not all brides. Some wedding experts are noticing a new trend — couples shunning the “bling” and traditional wedding bands for commitment jewelry.

“Honestly, I haven’t seen that,” Norman said. “I can understand why someone would prefer to have that, if the are getting married for the second time.”

She’s right. Some couples marrying for the second or third time are opting for the alternative.

“The alternative we see, our customers come in is that they want a sapphire or ruby for the center stone in the engagement ring,” Benjamin said.

“I have seen a trend in commitment jewelry, but I have not seen a trend in lieu of the wedding ring or engagement ring,” Barbara Wasserstrom said.

While some couples are opting to buy necklaces, medallions and bracelets to show their unity, they aren’t big sellers. But if commitment jewelry catches on, wedding vows could change.

“No, we don’t see that anytime soon, it will always be, with this ring or with this diamond, I thee wed,” Benjamin said. “Girls love their diamonds, they want more, they want bigger.”

According to the jewelers, alternative or commitment jewelry is popular among same sex couples, and older brides prefer earrings, pearl necklaces or engraved medallions.
